Hey you- Stop flushin’ the toilet!

August 3rd, 2007 · 3 Comments

So remember that post from a week ago asking you to reveal your innermost toileting secrets?? Well please continue to vote- although I’ve moved the poll over to the sidebar…

How often do you flush the toilet?

Basically, I point out that the there are roughly 3.3 billion people using toilets on Earth. Each person urinates about 5 times per day. Toilets use at least 1.5 gallons of water per flush. I point out that the toilet need not be flushed each and every time it is used- that it is perfectly reasonable and hygienic to have leave urine unflushed. So the results are as expected- that a majority of people flush every damn time the pee… Here it is:
Before I tell you flushin’ fools all the reasons why you should NOT flush, I’ll give you the big one. If everyone flushed every other time you went pee, we’d save 6.6 BILLION GALLONS OF WATER SAVED DAILY- 2.4 TRILLION GALLONS YEARLY!

For Comparison:

  • Arizona uses 2.4 trillion gallons of water STATEWIDE yearly
  • California uses 14 trillion
  • We could fill Lake Tahoe with saved water in 20 years. Long time yes, but the lake is huge!!

Now extend the principal of water conservation and toilets to taking showers, doing dishes, brushing teeth, watering your lawn, washing your car. Unlike many conservation issues, you as a single individual have the power to conserve massive amounts of water. Parents- teach your kids how to save water. Teachers- tell your students.

We may not be able to rid the earth of plastic bags, but we can save water by making simple. painless changes to our routines. C’mon people just do it!

Uhhh, are you serious, or is this whole site a joke? I hope it is a joke.

“Saved water???” Water is returned to the lake / reservoir / earth after it is treated and used. What you need to explore is the impact of water treatment. In most cases, the less contaminated the water, the less treatment products used. The first step in most decontamination processes is addition of free water, so by flushing urine (dilute), you are not “saving” much, if anything, at all.

But, I think you are joking with this whole site. Come on, you need research to show unflushed urine is not hygienic? It might not make you ill, but smell it. Please — development of infrastructure and effective sewage has been one of the most effective advances in preventing disease; let’s not move backward.

In other news, I’m never going to your house.
