Yep, this might be serious. There’s been some similar obsession with aples documented in French litterature from the very early previous century. I can imagine a connection with the symbolism of aples in a predominantly christian culture, but with potatoes I’m rather confused…
As for your “sickos searches” post, I think you may reconsider the hypothesis of a serious pathology: I recently realised some people simply don’t get or are ignorant of “AND” being a logic operator in internet searches. I guess your “sex with cat” query might well be from someone searching for information in pages with “sex AND cat”. This would make (more?) sense given sex in cats is ‘hear-sayly’ known to be traumatic for females, and this someone may have just been trying to know more about it, and not willing to try anything special…
