Man, Point Reyes was AWESOME! First, we saw this Black Tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) while walking up to the Lighthouse. I spotted him sitting in the shade, then foraging on some dry grass. He was obviously used to people, as he just continued his business. He was pretty small and thin- maybe its a bad year for deer as well. Kate and the big kids walked down (and up)the 302 steps to get th ethe lighthouse itself- I stayed at the top and watched them sweat!
After the lighthouse, we decided that the beach would be nice. Kate has asked about a “kid friendly” one at the visitors center- you know, one where the kids can get wet without being sucked out to sea by the current.. They recommended Drakes Beach. Although there were no seashells or mammals- the water seemed to be shallow- and the kids has a ton of fun. But the highlight for me FOR SURE, was to see the Tule Elk (Cervus elaphus)!
Here is the dominant male
Here is part of the herd- which consisted of the big guy, 3 subadults, ~10 females, and ~5 juveniles..
What would the beach be without seagulls? Aside from looking pretty- the kids have fun chasing them..

Awwww I do have the best family outting ideas! I also want to make clear that I ran down all 302 (3story building) plus steeps with infant straped on and 2 of our older kids and back up in less than 20 min.. Good thing we have the other 2 youngster for you to have an excuse not to go down, or worse up the 302 stairs! It was a fun family day!
