A year without TP?

March 23rd, 2007 · 3 Comments

I am an environmentalist, I try to conserve and be respectful of nature. I completely agree that human consumption vastly oversteps production, and that this is not sustainable. We are the primary cause of global working, contemporary mass extinctions, and most other bad things. There are MANY ways to go about changing things, ceasing to wipe you ass for an entire year is not one of them, as has a couple of people in NYC.

Just imagine… No wait, dont.

In addition to this, they have given up anything powered by fossil fuel, disposable goods, processed food, etc. Basically, they don’t eat things they haven’t seen alive on the plant.

I guess that although I find it extreme I support their efforts to reduce. I guess my criticism is though that people with audiences should focus on measure that can be reasonably implemented. Just like recycling, nobody does it if you have to haul your recyclables to the car and drive someplace to drop them off. In contrast, give the whole world a blue bin and come to pick it’s contents up weekly, and all but the laziest will contribute.

Just to same, I don’t think that the no TP idea is likely to catch on, although some others might.

A few of the comments on the NYTimes site about the No Impact piece were more interesting than the piece itself, like the third world vs. 1st world takes on cleanliness. Third worlders find it weird that we think wiping with paper leaves us clean. It’s really quite surprising that we think we’re cleaner than those who actually wash.

Wiping with water and soap is an infinitely superior system.

Toilet paper is a relatively new invention in the grand scheme of things. There are other ways to maintain one’s personal hygiene.
