So I was having a discussion with an office mate and fellow PhD student the other day about seminar behavior. I’ll admit that this was in part prompted by our mutual (and probably universal) experiences of having been to some pretty boring departmental seminars- mostly brought on our own ignorance of a particular topic.
So here is the question… When finding yourself at a seminar your finding dreadfully boring- what is the most reprehensible thing to do?? What do you do?
- Leave- as quietly as possible
- Stay- but fall asleep
- Stay- but read whatever you “accidentally” brought with you.
- Stay- Trying to look interested
I would say that I usually adopt strategy 3, and think that 1 is the most rude. What do you guys think?
For me- when I present, I find strategy 1 most distracting- but while I notice the other behaviors in the audience, I don’t find any 1 to be worse than the others..
